Nach seiner Ausreise aus Russland hat er sich zwei Dinge versprochen: Nicht mehr auf der Straße zu landen und mit seiner Mutter vor ihrem Tod noch eine wunderbare Reise zu machen. Es kommt für ihn nicht infrage, Verpflichtungen einzugehen und anderen Menschen Versprechen zu machen. Aber das war, bevor er Shane kennenlernte. Der ernsthafte, mutige und so bescheidene Shane spricht Mikhails Sprache und – was Mikhail am meisten überrascht – Shane hat die unerwartete Eigenschaft, seine Versprechen zu halten.

Mikhail Vasilyovitch Bayul danse comme un ange, mais son passé est loin d’être paradisiaque. Depuis qu’il a quitté la Russie, il n’a fait que deux promesses : se tenir à l’écart de la rue et rester clean, et emmener sa mère dans un bel endroit avant qu’elle meure. Faire des promesses à quelqu’un d’autre est absolument hors de question – mais Mikhail n’avait jamais rencontré quelqu’un comme Shane. Sérieux, courageux et ayant une forte tendance à se dévaloriser, Shane semble parler le langage de Mikhail, et personne n’est plus surpris que ce dernier de découvrir que tenir ses promesses est le plus grand talent de Shane.

Deacon wünscht sich nichts mehr, als dass Crick seinen schlechten Erinnerungen und ihrer kleinen Stadt entflieht und eine strahlende Zukunft findet. Aber nach zwei Jahren, indenen seine Gefühle für seinen Freund immer tiefer werden, kann er derVersuchung nicht mehr widerstehen und gibt Cricks Annäherungsversuchen nach.Der schüchterne Deacon gibt endlich zu, dass er ein Teil von Cricks Lebenwerden möchte.

Aber Crick wartet nur darauf, von Deacon wieder verstoßen zu werden – so wie er in der Vergangenheit von seiner Familie verstoßen wurde. Eine seiner typischen, spontanen Fehlentscheidungen lässt ihn weit weg von zuhause enden. Deacon bleibt allein zurück. Er ist am Boden zerstört und muss hart kämpfen, bis er sein gebrochenes Herz wieder heilen und er in einer Welt überleben kann, in der Cricks Liebe einewiges Versprechen ist, das vielleicht niemals in Erfüllung gehen wird.

Carrick Francis a passé la majeure partie de sa vie à sauter à pieds joints dans les problèmes. La seule chose qui l’a sauvé de la prison, ou pire, est sa dévotion absolue envers Deacon Winters. Alors Deacon est presque détruit en découvrant que Crick attendait qu’il le repousse, exactement comme la famille de Crick l’avait fait par le passé. Quand le don de Crick pour prendre des décisions sur des coups de tête le conduit loin de chez lui, Deacon finit abandonné, traumatisé et seul, luttant pour reforger son cœur dans un monde où l’amour avec Crick est une promesse, mais en aucun cas une certitude.

Dix ans auparavant, le Shérif adjoint Aaron George a perdu sa femme et a déménagé à Colton, pensant qu’il serait mieux pour ses enfants de grandir dans une petite ville. Puis un acte violent met en danger leur relation naissante. Leurs responsabilités sont maintenant essentielles pour empêcher leur ville d’exploser. Lorsque les choses deviennent critiques, ils réalisent que leur famille nouvellement forgée pourrait être ce qui empêche leur monde d’échapper à tout contrôle.
